tree tap

The Black River FFA Chapter recently took part in a unique hands-on learning

experience right on our school grounds—tapping maple trees that will be collected for

sap production!

Our Plant and Animal Science classes took the lead in preparing collection bags,

ensuring everything was ready for the sap-gathering process. Meanwhile, students in

Forestry and AFNR (Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources) classes had the

opportunity to head outdoors and tap the trees. This process allows students to witness

firsthand how sap is harvested before being transformed into delicious maple syrup.

Not only did this activity reinforce classroom lessons on plant science and forestry, but it

also provided students with a deeper appreciation for the natural resources around

them. By engaging in a process that farmers and syrup producers have used for

generations, members gained insight into the patience and effort required to produce

this sweet treat.

At Black River FFA, learning goes beyond textbooks—we embrace hands-on

experiences that connect students with the real-world applications of agriculture and

natural resources. Opportunities like this help our members develop practical skills while

fostering a strong appreciation for the environment.

As the sap collection continues, we look forward to following the journey from tree to

table. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!
