Ten dedicated members of the Black River FFA recently showcased their skills in the Ohio FFA State Animal Management Career Development Event (CDE), a highly competitive program focused on knowledge and expertise in the companion animal industry.

This event is designed to test students' understanding of a wide range of companion animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, ferrets, amphibians, reptiles, birds, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, and other pocket pets. The competition began with a rigorous 75-question written test, with only the top 150 participants advancing to the state finals.

At the finals, students demonstrated their hands-on abilities through four challenging practicums: handling animals, determining their sex, preparing appropriate cages, and identifying breeds within various species.

Black River FFA members performed exceptionally well, with Emma McCann earning a remarkable 7th place overall, placing her among the state’s top 10 individual competitors. Addison Flynn also earned recognition, finishing in 62nd place.

The team was supported by alternates Carson Steidl, Parker Broadsword, Hannah Pierson, Colton Roberts, Olivia Bailey, Brayden Lawhon, Emma Macfarlane, and Jude Bailey, who contributed to the group’s success.

Black River FFA continues to excel in fostering agricultural education and practical skills, proudly representing their community at the state level.
